I took this photo of Chris in March 2003. He had been playing guitar for about eighteen months, banjo for six. In just a few weeks he and I would head off to our first Pete Wernick jam camp, where things would change for us. Meanwhile, Chris had just completed his first recording, “Solo Banjo and Guitar”, using a tape recorder. We had a tape duplicator so I made a few copies for friends and relatives, including a nice cover using this photo. Thankfully the recording got digitized somewhere along the way, and I have a copy of it on my computer. It’s nothing Chris would want you to hear, but I listen to it every so often with pleasure.
Chris inherited the guitar from his grandpa, and still uses it as a practice instrument. We bought him the Deering Goodtime banjo, which he used until it was time to graduate to a professional quality Ome banjo.
