Here’s another of the 95 folk songs we recorded on the front porch, Red Wing. It is very popular as a fiddle tune, but you don’t hear the words so much anymore. You may have heard Woody Guthrie’s version, Union Maid, with it’s tag line “Oh, you can’t scare me, I’m sticking to the union …”
This recording is an example of the limits of our project, as well as its potential charm. Most of these songs are not in our regular repertoire, and never will be, so we can’t afford to polish them up. Though we had run through it a couple of times, I was still reading words off a page and not exactly inhabiting the story. But it is still nice for a casual singing, on the order of picking up a songbook and saying, “Hey, let’s sing this one.” We even planned to call ourselves the Front Porch Singers for this particular sub-project.
